Cover Crazy: Comparison

Cover Crazy was created by Tawni @ The Book Worms. It allows bloggers to share which cover(s) that they are going crazy over.

This week, my “Cover Crazy” post is going to be more of a “Cover Comparison” post. I do like these covers, but I’m not sure which I like best, and would like to know what message the cover artist was trying to convey. It’s probably fairly obvious to most novel enthusiasts, but it is common for some books to have a different cover, depending on which part of the world (ie. country), the book was purchased. I recently posted in my last In My Mailbox (IMM 2) that I purchased If I Stay by Gayle Forman. I received a few comments about the cover being nice, but different. I live in Australia, and I’ve noticed most of the Book Blog community I’ve interacted with so far seems to be from the United States area. We [Australia] seem to source our books form the United Kingdom, so we share their covers as well as their strange way of spelling some words :).

Here is a comparison of the different covers of If I Stay.

These four different covers, and I know there are more from other countries also, evoke four different emotions and responses from me. I haven’t read the book (although it will probably be in the next 1 or 2 that I read), and only have the blurb to go by for content (GoodReads).

I think I prefer the USA – Hardcover, but am unsure which best fits the story itself.

Have you read If I Stay by Gayle Forman? If so, which cover portrays the story best? Also, which cover do you like best?

p.s – Just on a side note, I liked the UK/Australian covers for the Harry Potter series better (Deathly Hallows covers) :P

  1. i love the USA paperback version as it compliments where she went. but all others are beautiful in their own ways.

  2. I was just talking about these four covers with someone the other day! I like the two international versions of the two US editions. Like you, I haven't read the book yet, but plan to this week (at least before it's due at the library Thursday...). I think the US HB is too ordinary. Nothing stands out about it. The PB...I don't know, I just don't like the image. Neither cover ever made me want to pick up the book. I want to read it b/c of the reviews. I do love the WHERE SHE WENT US cover, though! The UK pb cover is also on the ordinary side, but I prefer this face to the US pb. I think my favorite of the four is the UK hb. There's more going on and it would make me pick it up to see what it was about! Plus, twirling girl, yay! ^.~

  3. I don't really love any of the covers, but my favorite is probably the UK paperback. I haven't read the book yet though, so I don't know how well it works for the story/character. Nice cover crazy pick! I like seeing the cover comparison.

  4. Oh, I don't know which one of these I'd choose if they were all in front of me!

My faves are UK paperback and the US paperback. I actually have the one on the US paperback, but I haven't read it yet.

I like seeing different covers for the same book.

  5. Ohh the story is fantastic. I am going to say the UK hardback probably best portrays the story.

  6. Such a diverse range of responses to my questions, thanks :).

@Yas, Yes, they are all beautiful in their own ways, just an example of all the different ways that you can portray a single event/story.

@A Backwards Story (or Bonnie?), Looking purely at the US versions, one evokes a sort of happiness or contentment, while the other seems a little scary. I probably would have picked up both the UK and US Hardcover, although only noticed & purchased the UK Paperback after recognising the title and author. Hope you enjoy(ed) the book, and yes, Yay for twirling girl :)

@Small Review, I agree, I don’t LOVE any of the covers, but did find them interesting. Cover comparisons are fun.

@Jennifer, The majority of the time, I like the cover realised in my country, so I’m not disappointed with the UK Paperback. But I have put off buying the Hex Hall series because I prefer the US covers :P.

@Pixie, Yes, I’ve heard good things about it, so I’m excited to read it. So, UK hardback best describes the story? That’s good, cause I like that cover!

  7. I haven't read the book yet, but I like the two hardcovers the best. I'm not a huge fan of face covers.

  8. @Sarah, I'm not a fan of large cover images either. For me, "less is often more". Thanks for commenting!

  10. I'm almost finished the book, hooray! Now knowing the story, I think the UK-Paperback best portrays it :).. But I still like the US-Hardcover
